'astroscales' is the creative project of Australian artist Matthew Steel, blending electronic music, cinematic storytelling and immersive world-building. Following a series of concept albums exploring mythology, identity and transformation, the project now enters its Authoring Era — placing the creator at the centre of the story through music, podcasting, live performance and personal narrative. This new phase places Matthew Steel directly within the work, shifting from symbolic avatars to embodied storytelling. Through music, podcasts, live experiences and visual world-building, the Authoring Era documents the process of becoming rather than merely imagining. The current project, CUSTOM MADE — A Study in Self-Creation, transforms the language of workshops, bodywork and restoration into a powerful metaphor for identity itself—exploring what we inherit, what we repair and ultimately what we choose to become.
