Beat Night is a 25 year old poetry reading backed by a full band upstairs at The Press Room in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Beat Night is one of the longest running creative traditions celebrating local and regional poets and live improvised music in New Hampshire. Beat Night is every 4th Thursday of the month (unless otherwise noted) at 7pm.
Beat Night was originally started and run for 14 years by Larry Simon. Beat Night began its first year at the Crazy Cat Lounge and quickly moved to The Press Room where it held sway for the next 16 years. Lengthy repairs and upgrades at The Press Room forced us to find a new venue and Beat Night landed at Portsmouth Book & Bar for several years and is now back at The Press Room.
Poets give a few words about the tone, style or mood they want for their piece and the band improvises something just for that. Beat Night is a mutual exchange of inspiration between the writer, the band and the audience and it’s never the same thing twice.
