Douglas Schmidt and John Oliver first collaborated during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2021, creating an album of music based on Douglas' compositions on the theme of breath. Oliver transformed the original recordings with granular delay and other processing. Impressed with the result, Douglas decided that this sound was perfect for that first album, titled "Isolation Journal 2 - Breathe." They have worked together extensively ever since, creating three more albums, and forming the Squid in Chains trio with François Houle.
