Family Ranks are a 7-piece future-soul, hip hop collective from Manchester. They formed in 2014 out of a union between session band House of Lords (of Manchester Music night 'All About Good Music') and two of Manchester’s sharpest song-writers; Ruby-Ann Patterson and James Gill.
The band’s dynamic arrangements and dark, hard-hitting grooves are centred around the front pairings introspective song writing. Their framework of rhythmically unpredictable and lush compositions has come to define their sound. Musically they’ve arrived where Erykah Badu left off, and along the way they reference the expansive compositions of outfits such as Submotion Orchestra and Hiatus Kaiyote as well as the soulful, rootsy sound of Jamie Woon and Fat Freddys Drop.
Very much a live focused group The Ranks have supported artists such as Natty on his ‘Release the Fear’ UK Tour, The Hot 8 Brass Band and have also opened for Badly Drawn Boy and JP Cooper. The past year has seen them play notable festivals.
