SONGBOOK STATION is the YouTube channel of composer, producer, and Juilliard faculty member Edward Barnes. The channel explores how great American songs were written — and why. Episodes examine the craft, history, and cultural context of works ranging from Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz” to Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and Joni Mitchell’s “Coyote.” Drawing on original recordings, film footage, and close musical analysis, Songbook Station looks beyond nostalgia to reveal structure, lyric construction, performance history, and the cultural forces behind these songs. Edward Barnes is a recipient of Guggenheim and NEA Fellowships and the Stephen Sondheim Award. He serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School and lectures regularly at major cultural institutions.
