With their humble beginnings rooted in a corner of the music block at the former College of The Bahamas, these scholars turned musicians have been able to make remarkable strides toward their dreams of becoming The Bahamas’ premier jazz fusion band. The band consists of Charisa Smith, sultry lead vocalist; Dion Turnquest, veteran saxophonist extraordinaire; Jermaine Taylor, rhythmic percussionist; and Victor Johnson, skilled pianist and keyboardist. As a jazz fusion band, Essence Band aims to push the limits of integration between the all-time favorite jazz standard artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis, and the modern-day jazz/R&B artists such as Lalah Hathaway and Robert Glasper. Aside from their common interest in experimentation with jazz fusion music, they consistently celebrate, as well as tease, each other off stage. With insatiable chemistry both on and off stage, the Essence Band threatens to steal the hearts of anyone who dares to listen to their alluring sounds.
