This channel features video clips of wildlife on the waterways of the Fens, especially otters.
Otter activity was recorded inside constructed holts. The holts were built into the banks of drains and rivers of the Fens. They give a unique view of the behavior of otters and other animals that visit the holts. Some of the behavior, such as otters bringing in bedding to the holt, has rarely, if ever, been filmed. Otters do not take up permanent residence in the holts but use them as occasional shelters, especially in hard weather.
Our native water voles have suffered very large population declines due to predation by the release of non-native American mink. Mink control is gradually allowing water voles to recover by the use of smart humane traps. The mink trap rafts also attract other wildlife that can not enter the trap tunnels, especially otters, which like to climb on top of them. Wood mice, water shrews & water voles are among the small mammals recorded.
