The exterminator wanted more than $3,000, and I didn’t have that kind of money. So I went back to what my grandfather taught me. He came over from Italy with almost nothing before the hard years hit, and that man could solve just about any problem with a few tools, common sense, and whatever he had lying around. My Cuban grandmother had her own home tricks too, and between the two of them, I learned that the old folks knew how to keep a house running without buying a new product every week. Later, I worked for years in pest control, and I saw how many people waste money on sprays and treatments that never fix the root problem.
