Demeter is a five-piece indie rock band from Brooklyn, NY. Feminine, heavy, and choral - their songs are poetry-focused, femme centered, and infused with multiple genres. Their first EP, The Year of Goodbye, was released in August of 2020 to international play and positive reviews calling the band “hedonistic psyche revelry” and comparing it to “jazz, blues and no wave all meeting at the poetry slam.”
In November 2022, they released The Body Moves Pt. I, with the help of Melina Duterte (“Jay Som”) and Idania Valencia. Included in the set of three songs was the fiery and tumultuous track “Monster,” the gentle counter “October 14th,” and a sweeping memorial for singer Kate Rivera’s father, “Mountain or A Man.”
Demeter combines the songwriting and vocals of Kate Rivera with the production and musicality of guitarist Ian McNally, drummer John Mason, bassist Daniel Bloch, and keyboardist Tim Bustle.
