This channel presents a large sample of the music of the University of Illinois Russian Folk Orchestra (1974-1997), one of the United States' foremost amateur Russian folk instruments ensembles. Founded by University of Illinois music professor John Garvey, the Orchestra gave more than 170 concerts over its 24 years of existence. The Orchestra drew its members from the University community, the cities of Champaign and Urbana, Illinois, and other surrounding towns. Few members had ever played the ensemble's chief instruments, the Russian balalaika and domra, prior to joining the group. The ensemble's repertoire, numbering more than 200 works, was wide-ranging, from traditional Russian folk orchestra numbers to classical pieces and even American popular tunes. Much of the variety of musical numbers can be credited to the Orchestra's later musical director, Victor Gorodinsky, a graduate of the Gnessin Institute in Moscow, who also composed works for the ensemble.
