Western Mining Preservation aims to preserve, document, and protect historic mining areas for the enjoyment of all people. We do this through donations of land or by purchasing the property where historic mines are located, as well as working with federal, state, county, and local governments that manage historic mining areas. Western Mining Preservation is working towards obtaining its own mining claims to work in an educational capacity. These claims are “teaching claims” where people can come and experience what it was like to mine firsthand in historic mines, using traditional mining techniques.
Through its media wing, Mine Tailings, Western Mining Preservation creates video content that is unique and educational. Using the history of frontier mining as a starting point, Mine Tailings explores the stories of the people, places, and discoveries that shaped the American West and continue to play a role in its present and future.
