The Ornithology Program at Saint Vincent College is directed by Dr. James Kellam, Associate Professor of Biology. Interested students can enroll in up to 3 bird-related courses he offers. In addition, he supervises student-initiated research projects every year and conducts his own studies. Dr. Kellam has published peer-reviewed articles on Downy, Hairy, Red-headed, and Pileated Woodpeckers, the Northern Flicker, the Blue Jay, and the Tufted Titmouse; he has collaborated with others on projects involving the Acorn Woodpecker, American Crow, and Kentucky Warbler; his students have researched these species plus the American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, White-breasted Nuthatch, and captive vultures and owls. Ornithology students at Saint Vincent have gone on to earn PhD and MS degrees in Biology as well as DVM degrees in Veterinary Science. Former students are employed by the National Aviary, National Audubon Society, and various other organizations and companies with an animal emphasis.
