Knights were mounted warriors who emerged in medieval Europe (roughly 1000-1500 CE) as a professional military class. Originally defined by their ability to afford expensive warhorses, armor, and weapons, they evolved into a distinct social identity with moral expectations, i.e. knighthood.
The word "knight" derives from Old English "cniht", which originally meant "boy," "youth," or "servant."
In other languages, the association with horses is emphasized:
Occitan: Cavalhièr (or cavalièr depending on dialect; from caval = horse)
Catalan: Cavaller (from cavall)
Spanish: Caballero (from caballo)
French: Chevalier (from cheval)
German: Ritter (from reiten = to ride)
I am a fan of history, and I have a background in archaeology and education.
