Juha Saunala is known as a musician from the ensembles of Ramy Essam (EGY), Sepi Kumpulainen (FIN) and Jaan Pehk (EST), as well as for his collaborations with many other artists. He has been performing as a solo artist since 2023 and has played widely across Finland and internationally.
Nicknamed the “Master of Melancholy,” Saunala doesn’t use the typical solo setup of “man & guitar.” Instead, it’s “man & electric bass.” This unique approach, which always captures the audience’s attention, has now been recorded, just vocals and electric bass as it sounds live, with a third track of self-recorded ambience to enrich the mood. On stage, that third layer comes from the ambient sounds of the venue and the audience.
His music is generally a mix of dark-tinged prog and jazz, combined with wistful songs inspired by 1970s Finland.
“I talk about heavy stuff happening in the world, but my goal isn’t to bring people down, it’s to fight against the unfairness,” he says.
