Hunter Hills Theatre, outside Gatlinburg, was built in 1955 and 1956 by the R. L. Maples family for the outdoor drama ''Chucky Jack," performed 1966-1969. Hunter Hills was donated to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1965. The Theatre Department staged shows from 1966-1977, under the direction of Fred Fields and Thomas Cooke. Mostly musicals, such as "Annie Get Your Gun," "Oklahoma!," "The Sound of Music," and "Hello, Dolly!" were performed during the summer seasons. However, the mountain drama "Dark of the Moon," based on the ballad of "Barbara Allen," was what the theater became known for. UT students and locals had a unique theatrical experience at Hunter Hills Theatre and have continued to gather and celebrate their enduring love for each other and Hunter Hills at Homecomings in 1986, 1991, and 2006, as well as a Valentines Zoom in 2021. On this channel, the theater's history and legacy is presented through images, words, interviews, and music.
