Nearly forty years after Gula Gula introduced her to the world on Real World Records, Mari Boine remains one of the most influential voices in global music and Sámi culture. With Roger Ludvigsen, she shaped a unique sound that earned her four Spellemann awards, the Nordic Council Music Prize, and Norway’s highest civilian honour, the Order of St. Olav. A tireless advocate for Sámi identity, she has inspired generations while touring across the world and contributing to major film soundtracks.
Mari has released sixteen albums, most recently Alva (2024), a deeply personal return to her roots. Her appearance on Every Time We Meet brought her music to an even wider audience. In 2026, as she turns seventy, celebrations will include a TV documentary, a special concert in Oslo, and major European hall performances. Her music is currently featured at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall.
Mari smiles: “Right now, I feel whole — as complete as I’ve always wanted to be.”
