When Rick Harris left his home in Alabama to explore Europe, he couldn't have guessed what would happen when he arrived. A chance meeting with a fellow American led to the recording of "This is the Beginning" at a studio in a quiet part of Wales. Rick and members of his live band were supported by bassist Tim Harries (Katie Melua, Steeleye Span), drummer/percussionist James Mackintosh (Transatlantic Sessions, Shooglenifty) and multi-instrumentlist and ethnomusicologist Simon Keegan-Phipps (nice to use ethnomusicologist, Dobro and Alabama in the same paragraph). The album was engineered and mixed by Martin Levan, whose production credits include the original soundtrack albums for Cats and Phantom of the Opera and a number of artists in different genres as well as engineering credits for June Tabor and urban folk pioneers, Iron Maiden (Martin has a quirky portfolio).
