Pictured: Fr. Robert W. Greene, MM; b 6/12/1911, d 9/11/2003; Ordained priest 6/16/1937 at Maryknoll Seminary, Ossining, New York; then assigned to the Maryknoll mission in Kweilin, Kwangsi, South China, remaining there through WW II, dispensing spiritual & medical aid, surviving Japanese bombings and helping nearby personnel of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
After home leave, he returned to Kweilin, becoming pastor of the Tungan mission in March, 1947. On Oct 15, he was confined to his mission under house arrest by Maoist Communists. He learned to make his own hosts and offered his Mass when the guards were asleep. He was arrested in 1952, subjected to incessant questioning and torture, sentenced to execution, then banished, crossing into Hong Kong under guard on April 13, 1952.
His book "Calvary in China" is a testament to a generous missionary life, an undaunted faith & sacrifice under oppression.
