The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music resides on the Howard College campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal and is a facility within the Music cluster in the School of the Arts. The Centre was founded by Prof Darius Brubeck in 1989 and functions as a live music venue, and has hosted countless musicians from SA and abroad in its weekly Trios concerts on Wednesdays and monthly Twosday concerts on Tuesdays.
In addition, the Centre runs an active jazz outreach program to schools in Durban and has hosted several youth jazz initiatives to unearth and support young local jazz talent. The Centre also hosts the annual Jazz Jol, the funds from which accrue to the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship that assists UKZN jazz students with fees and yearly travel to the National Youth Jazz festival in Grahamstown.
The Centre has provided opportunity for a numerous jazz students in its facilitating of international cultural and music exchanges. It also hosts organizes regular music workshops.
