“And look! a barge comes bringing from Athy and other far-flung towns, mythologies” Patrick Kavanagh; The people of Athy and nearby surrounding areas have managed to influence a great many people both nearby and in far flung places, all contributors recognised in the Made of Athy project which includes dedicated plaques throughout the town celebrating Athy’s contribution to music, such as the Smiths, and The Stone Roses and many more. Also literature, film and politics,“John Maher”, “Johnny Marr”, “Mani” The Requiem compiled by local Playwright John McKenna and Leonard Cohen. The plaque celebrating this joint undertaking is situated at the Athy Community Art Centre. Where you just might be lucky enough to enjoy the legendary guitarist Gordon Giltrap MBE. Yet another Made of Athy Band “Picture This”, aptly leading to the Internationally renowned photographer John Minihan.
