The Pleyel Ensemble brings together some of the UK’s leading instrumentalists who share a passion for chamber music past and present. Based in Manchester, UK, the group comprises strings, wind and piano allowing for many possible instrumental combinations. We have recently recorded a four-CD set of the music of the English composer Arnold Cooke (1906-2005), mostly world premiere recordings and we love to dig out unjustly neglected music, as well as playing the staple greats of the repertoire.
Finally, we take our name from the Classical composer and pupil of Haydn, Ignaz Pleyel, who wrote much music for small groups, in addition to being a brilliant businessman, piano manufacturer and music publisher - what a dude! He did much to bring music-making to a wide and diverse public; also our passion!
