Philadelphia Orchestra stereo performances from the ‘60s and ‘70s that are not widely available. Mainly Ormandy, but also many notable guest conductors. Most will be broadcast performances of subscription and pension fund concerts at Philadelphia's Academy of Music (and off season at Saratoga's SPAC) in repertoire never commercially recorded (or not with that soloist/conductor). Some will be commercial recordings not widely available (some RCA from 1968-77). Live performances of warhorses will be included only if there is something unique relative to the commercial release, or if I was too lazy to delete them from their rarer coupling. Listen along with me, as I consider whether Philadelphia sounded better back then, or sounds better now, and why. Banner artwork painted in 1952 by Alfred Bendiner depicts Rachmaninoff at the piano with Ormandy conducting on December 2, 1939 at the Academy of Music; it currently hangs in the lobby of Marian Anderson Hall in Philadelphia.
