The Space Program (TSP) is a hip-hop collective creating safe spaces out of violent spaces by incorporating hip-hop and poetry in American higher education.
The Space Program collective started as a group of hip-hop artists, poets, musicians, producers, and creatives who came together to support and participate in Stevie “Dr. View” Johnson’s dissertation which was developed to demonstrate and analyze how Black collegians at historically white institutions interrogate and disrupt anti-Blackness, in effort to take flight, or become free. Dr. View’s vision was to create a body of work on wax that would extend beyond defending his dissertation and exist in the world on its own. The body of work was an album titled, The Curriculum of the Mind. After the completion of the album and the successful defense of his dissertation, Dr. View, along with the other members of The Space Program understood that there was more work to be done and more space to be created.
