The Guanches (Igwanciyen Berber) are the first known inhabitants of the Canary Islands. These people, of Berber origin, were still living in the Stone Age when the Europeans arrived during the Middle Ages. Their culture has disappeared as such, but has left some vestiges. The Guanches were a branch of the Berbers who, at the dawn of historical times, populated the north of the African continent from Egypt to the Atlantic Ocean. A large number of Guanches died resisting the Spanish conquest, many were sold into slavery, many also embraced the Catholic faith and married the conquerors.
