"Viva fuy in Sylvis; sum dura occisa securi; Dum vixi tacui, mortua dulce cano" -14th Century viol label by Gaspar Duiffroprugar Alchemical String Theory is a collective of string players obsessed with stringed instruments, their mysteries, folklore, and incredible hold over the imagination of their creators. Founded by violinist and composer Paul Mercer, it currently has three main members and a growing army of collaborators. AST is dedicated to producing music spontaneously through disciplined improvisation. Drawing on different styles and eras of musical concepts like baroque continuo, hindustani raga, shaped note singing, blues, bebop, and the torrid excesses of the great violinist/composers of antiquity. We seek to bring awareness to the lost art of tuning, and subvert the trivialization of music, and reestablish connect the mystery traditions of the musical wizards and alchemists who through millennia searched for tantalizing clues to the lost enneachords and secret notes.
