Lost Connections can be described as an expression of cine-poetry through rhythm, tone, juxtaposition and association. Drawing on a century of archive footage, the film invites reflections on loss, loneliness, isolation, and expressions of desire, optimism, renewal and hope for the future. It is a film about recovery and the joy of re-connecting with each other once again. Curators from twelve screen archives across the UK came together to explore how their collections could respond to the tumultuous time we have all been through and convey a collective desire for reconnection with people, community and nature. Andy Burns, film-maker at Yorkshire Film Archive, has meticulously crafted a dialogue between the past and the present, using nearly 200 films put forward by the archives. Artist and performer Hussina Raja provides a connecting voice, responding to the imagery with a recurring thread that weaves through the film: ‘Can we always be connected?’.
