“It is finished.”
These were the final words Jesus spoke before He gave His life on the cross. In Greek, the word is Tetelestai — a powerful term that comes from the verb teleo, meaning to bring to completion, to accomplish, to fulfill a purpose.
But Tetelestai is more than just a word. In the Greek language, it’s in the perfect tense — which means the action was completed in the past and its effects continue into the present. Unlike the simple past tense, which says “This happened,” the perfect tense says, “This happened, and it’s still true now.”
When Jesus cried, “It is finished,” He wasn’t saying, “I am finished,” as if defeated. He was declaring a victory — the mission was fulfilled. Every prophecy completed. Every debt paid. No unfinished business left behind.
Tetelestai is not a word of surrender — it's a proclamation of triumph.
And the power of that moment still changes lives today.
