Established in 2002, the Nanyang Polytechnic’s Symphony Orchestra (NYPSO) is the first polytechnic symphony orchestra in Singapore that is made up of both the winds orchestra and strings ensemble. Since its establishment, besides staging its widely-popular annual concerts, NYPSO has been actively engaging the community. These include performances at the Hospice Charity and Community Chest’s ‘Music from the Heart’ Charity Concert. Following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the Orchestra staged a fundraising concert. With the support of NYP staff and students, they raised more than $20,000 for the communities ravaged by the disaster. The orchestra completed in numerous prestigious international competitions and won Gold Medal at the 15th and 16th World Music Contest held in Kerkrade, the Netherlands and First Place with Excellent Success at the 2nd Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival held in Vienna, Austria.
