In 1988 he initiated his career singing in honkytonks around the South Texas area. After two years he released his first single “Yo No Se” in 1990 which was penned by Bocanegra with Mariano & Studio Band and recorded at Texas Sunrise Studio in Edinburg, Texas. After a brief history with Studio Band, he formed La Preferencia in December 1991. The band recorded many songs but none were released. They performed in the local club scene, social events and area festivals. In 1995 he released his first album under RicMar Productions, entitled Mariano y La Preferencia “Just Plain Bad”. All the songs were penned by Bocanegra and arranged by the band, except for one song Yo Te Ame which was written by Arturo Cortez. After a break from the music scene due to the pandemic of 2020, Mariano Bocanegra decided to begin as a solo artist in 2021.
