In 1981, 36 people, mainly women, marched from Cardiff to Greenham Common to protest at the siting of US nuclear missiles on UK common land. They formed the Greenham Common Women’s Peace camp which lasted until 2000 and became the largest female led movement since the fight for women’s suffrage. In a time before the internet and mobile phones, the women and their supporters managed to organise thousands for actions like “Embrace the Base” in 1982, in which 30,000 women held hands around the edges of the common. Greenham Women Everywhere is a heritage project collecting stories, memories and herstories from the camp and the women that made it, and sharing them with the next generation of activists.
