The Oxford 3000 and 5000 word lists are designed to serve as a basis for learners of English at different stages. The Oxford 3000 covers words that are essential for intermediate learners, while the Oxford 5000 includes an additional set of words for upper-intermediate and advanced learners. In terms of educational grading, the Oxford 3000 words are typically appropriate for students from lower secondary (middle school; Grades 6 to 8) to upper secondary (high school; Grades 9 to 12). The Oxford 5000 words, on the other hand, would be ideal for high school students progressing to more advanced studies, possibly even early university-level learners. Every word is aligned to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), guiding learners on the words they should know at A1-B2 level. It includes an additional 2000 words that are aligned to the CEFR, guiding advanced learners at B2-C1 level on the most useful high-level words to learn to expand their vocabulary.
