Salt Lake Cultural Association (SCA) was established in 1988 as a platform for promoting young talents, and supporting top level work in the field of Indian Classical Music and Dance. SCA organized its first music festival on the 28th of January, 1988 in loving memory of Pandit Mahapurush Mishra. It was inaugurated by the then Honerable Governor of West Bengal, Prof. Syed Nurul Hasan.
Artists of the highest calibre like Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan as well as budding talents set the pace for this movement.
Initially, SCA started out by organizing an annual music and dance competition and by offering scholarships to deserving pursuers of Indian classical music and dance. And then, to encourage and support excellence and hardwork in this field, SCA initiated the "Awards of Honor" - Jadubhatta Award, Sangeet Ratna Award, Kashi Ratna Award, Nrittya Ratna Award. This initiative, which started in 1997, continues till date.
