Cho Yong-gi was born on February 14, 1936, in Gyodong-ri, Samnam-myeon, Ulsan-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, the eldest of five sons and four daughters to his father Jo Du-cheon and mother Kim Bok-seon. When he was 17 years old, he was on the verge of death from tuberculosis in his second year. He went to his hometown, Ulsan, Jinjang, to rest, and received outpatient treatment in Busan. Meanwhile, he married Kim Seong-hye, the daughter of Pastor Ja-sil Choi, whom he met at the same school, on March 1, 1965, and they have three children.
