The singer and Oud player Wael Sami Elkholy and the pianist Esther Bächlin founded the duo Bächlin&Elkholy in 2022. The trigger was bringing two very different stringed instruments, moods and musical worlds together to create a distinctive sound. Their music moves between jazz, oriental and world. One can hardly escape the poetic voice of the singer with Egyptian roots. His multi-faceted singing merges with the warm sound of the Arabic lute, which he plays lively and dynamically. The pianist Esther Bächlin provides a cooling, watery note: with smooth playing, she weaves a shimmering soundscape in whose space and width the melodies and improvisations can unfold. The duo's music is dynamic and interactive but also lyrical and meditative. Slow tempos and ostinatos carry the listener into distant sound horizons. Fiery unison passages and intensive, escalating dialogues of the instruments and voices bring them back to the here and now!
