SETTS was founded by two musicians - a professional bassoonist and a musicologist/educator who both see the need to promote the creation and performance of new music by South-East Asian composers. The ensemble strives to be a meeting point for music, opinions and ideas and aims for a strong integration between performers and composers, and their individual areas of expertise. It also seeks to broaden the efforts to enable a deepened understanding and appreciation of contemporary Southeast Asian music across the globe, as well as place such music in context with contemporary music from around the world. The ensemble is unique in that it is made up for entirely professional musicians, and it aims to put on at least four concerts a year, thus establishing a regular presence in the Singapore cultural scene as well as the region. The ensemble's interest also lies in the diversity as well as research into the continued development of contemporary music's aesthetic concepts and forms.
