Welcome to the Ozark Chinquapin Foundation's youtube channel. The videos you find here are intended to spread the word and share information about the conservation of a species of tree called... you guessed it, the Ozark Chinquapin. Known by the scientific name Castanea ozarkensis, it is a member of the chestnut family. Since the arrival of the chestnut blight from Europe in the early 20th century, C. ozarkensis has seen severe decline. In fact, for many years, we thought C. ozarkensis had gone extinct entirely, but after a recent chance finding of a precious few surviving trees and rigorous study on our part, we have begun to see promise for the survival of the species.
The foundation is based in Poplar Bluff, Missouri in the United States, however we study trees found all across the eastern part of the US. We would like to invite anyone with any information on the Ozark Chinquapin to contact us. We're especially interested in finding healthy trees to add to the gene pool!
