In the UK out of a population of 60 million there are approximately 70,000 people living with HIV and 500 dying each year from an AIDS related illness. In South Africa out of a population of 47 million, 5.5 million have HIV and 1,000 die every day. Positive Heroes fresh, imaginative and inspirational approach to HIV is reducing the fear and stigma that still surround HIV, and act as barriers to testing, accessing treatment and getting support. Positive Heroes draws on the power that positive role models have to change people's minds, and their responses, to a dreaded epidemic of silence and shame. The charity raises the profile of South Africans who are living positively with HIV, from a wide variety of communities and walks of life both urban and rural, in order to encourage people to know and manage their status and live full, rewarding lives.
