Avenged Sevenfold is an American hard rock band from Hunington Beach, California, formed in 1999. After two demo's (one recorded in 1999 and the other in 2000), the band released their debut studio album in 2001 entitled "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet". The title is a reference to the book of Revelations in the Bible, similar to the band's name, "Avenged Sevenfold", being a reference to the story of Cain and Abel in the book of Genesis, specifically Genesis 4:24. The album received generally positive reviews, and would go on to be re-released by Hopeless Records in 2002 (originally the album was released by Good Life Recordings). It was a primarily hardcore punk/heavy metal album, with screamed vocals. The band's 2003 follow-up album, Waking the Fallen, received critical acclaim upon its release. It expressed more of a metalcore sound as it included more clean lyrics. It also attracted the attention of Warner Bros. studios, a major record label. In 2004, the band's lead singer, M. Shadows, could not scream anymore without the risk of damaging his voice, so their 2005 release, City of Evil (also the bands first major record-label release), would express a hard rock sound from the band. Lead singles like Beast and the Harlot and/or Bat Country lead the charts and are some of the bands most famous to this day. The album itself received critical acclaim and can be considered one of the greatest hard rock records of all-time. In 2007, the band released their self-titled album, Avenged Sevenfold, to positive reviews and sales, as it also showed a hard rock sound. The band would also go on to release their first (and so far, only) live album in 2008 entitled, "Live in the LBC and Diamonds in the Rough". It also was well-received. The band would remain mostly silent in 2009, only performing a few shows here and there. However, at the end of the year, on December 28th, 2009, Avenged Sevenfold's drummer/percussionist, Jimmy Sullivan (better known by his stage name, "The Rev") was found dead inside of his home due to a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol. May he rest in peace. In 2010, the band announced that their new, fifth studio album, would be completed and released, stating that The Rev would have hated it if they decided not to release it, even if it was due to his death. Therefore, the band would hire The Rev's favorite drummer, Mike Portnoy (of Dream Theater), to record the songs on the 5th studio album and go on the band's 2010 tour. M
