This channel describes lives for people of Fiji Indian heritage. Fiji is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, located Northeast of New Zealand and East of Australia. It is a beautiful country made up of over 300 islands however most people live on 2 main islands, at it's heights had population of 1 million. The traditional owners, Fijians and Fiji Indians make up majority of the population. Fiji is a former British colony, the British brought Indians to Fiji from northerns parts of India around 1868 in an indentured labour system (and to many other British colonies) to cultivate the land, mainly sugar cane plantation. In 1970 Fiji gained independence from the British and became an independent nation. It is the most well developed pacific island nation and was thriving until political problems started in 1987. Since then thousands of Fiji Indians have migrated to all parts of the world seeking to create new lives for themselves and their families.These are their stories.
