After college, Bob learned to program an IBM 1401 Computer, managed systems for Guarantee Mutual. He joined Ross Perot's Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and learned the IBM 360 computer. Bob then joined New England Life as chief information officer (CIO). After a series of promotions, he retired as CEO and Chairman. There is a link between songwriting and computer systems development. Both require left-brain knowledge and right-brain creativity. After retirement, Bob learned to play the piano, took a course from Berkeley Music on songwriting. Purchased an electronic keyboard, connecting it to his HP computer. The results of his musical journey can be found on the BobShaftolMusic.com website and at the Bob Shafto Music Channel on YouTube.com. Writing a song is about selecting the genre, key, title, structure- introduction/verse/chorus/bridge/ chorus/ending, and chord progressions, write the melodies, accompaniment and tell the story with lyrics. Songwriting is the magic of music.
