It was the vision of the musician and sociologist Mehmet Ungan to found a place or a center for intercultural encounters for music and dance. Together with a group of artists and cultural workers from different backgrounds, the Oriental Music Academy Mannheim was founded in 2008 in the Jungbusch district.
It started with socio-cultural projects in the district in the form of low-threshold educational opportunities for children and young people from immigrant families. Then came concerts with the artists of the OMM and their guests as well as courses and workshops. Since then, many facets of oriental music culture have been conveyed at a high artistic level. Culture maintenance and cultural exchange go hand in hand.
The OMM would like to set new accents with its work and open the view to the cultural wealth of the city of Mannheim - also with regard to the development as a "Unesco City of Music".
