The Stump Mutts started as a solo studio project by Asheville’s Neal Ward. We Can All Relate (2014) is the first Stump Mutts album to reflect collaboration with Ward’s bandmates: Derek Allen (guitar), Patrick Wells (drums) and John Lindsey (bass). The result is compelling. The Mutts also cut a new acoustic version of iSchool which has rich texture. The four-piece shapes an alternative rock sound akin to indelible 90’s rock idols with a twist. There are vintage and modern rock influences happening as well. Neal’s edgy vocals rest comfortably in the pocket the band creates for him. The band's energy shifts from build ups of sonic intensity to soothing, calm reflection. The Stump Mutts are an anomaly in Asheville, NC known as a hub for jam bands, old-time, folk & bluegrass musicians. Perhaps the old-time "murder ballad" buskers on the streets of Asheville have influenced the band - as their songs tend to reflect the darker side of life. However, their music is altogether different.
