A PLACE OF HER OWN (PLACE) is an art-based healing program series, lectures, exhibitions, presentations, workshops and panel discussions.
PLACE provides innovative ways to engage, heal and transform together.
PLACE reaches marginalized communities unlikely to seek out or gain access to healing or mental health resources. APA and WOC have the highest rates of suicide and mental health problems in the US, but are the lowest users of mental health services. Barriers to seeking help for domestic violence, trauma and depression are cultural, gender-related and community-bound. Fear of shaming the self and the family, guilt and self-sacrifice all pressure WOC women into silence. A significant lack of culturally competent and or acceptable resources contributes to problems remaining unidentified and untreated.
