Before the Barrage de L'Artige was built in the nineteenth century, the water in the Vienne River was regularly too high to cross safely. In the Middle Ages, riders and carts sometimes had to wait days before they could cross the river. Many people were looking for a safe place to spend the night. They were safe from highwaymen and other scum on the grounds of Romefort.
