Mar Gregorios Orthodox Cathedral, Bhilai {Official YouTube Channel} Malankara Christians came to Bhilai seeking jobs in Bhilai Steel Plant. But the growth of the steel plant and the city allowed them to make their abode in Bhilai. Thus, seeking spiritual satisfaction, some of the early members requested the then vicar of Jabalpur parish, Fr. K.K. Punnoose to come and celebrate a Holy Qurbana in Bhilai. On August 15, 1957, Fr. Punnoose (later the late lamented Dr. Stephanos Mar Theodosius) celebrated the first Holy Qurbana at a temporary setup at camp-2, Bhilai. Later in 1961, land at Industrial Area was purchased and a church was built. In 1977-78, the Holy Synod decided to elevate the Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church to a Cathedral church, and thereon the place had significant importance in the geography of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (Indian Orthodox Church) as the head office of the Calcutta Diocese was also placed at Bhilai.
