The aQuelle' Midmar Mile, founded in 1973, is the world’s largest open water swimming event, covering 1.6km across Midmar Dam in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Initially attracting only 153 swimmers, today it welcomes over 10,000 participants. Under the leadership of Race Director Wayne Riddin, who won the event twice, the Midmar Mile was recognized by Guinness World Records in 2009 as the largest open water swimming event.
The event attracts elite swimmers, including Olympians and World Champions, alongside swimmers of all abilities. Since 2016, the Charity Midmar Mile Challenge has raised over R20 million for various causes.
