Flip started his career as a musician with a student group that played music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. He bought his first bagpipes, built by Victor Nerinckx, in 1973. As a street musician he developed his own style in the following years. In addition, during this time he began to build his own bagpipes.
He has been part of the Groningen group Törf since 1984. He was also co-founder of the Slag ende Stoot group. He also conducted various choirs, sang in various (professional) opera productions and gave courses for, among others, the Stichting Volksmuziek Nederland and the Stichting Draailier en Doedelzak. He also offers private bagpiping tuition.
Flip's search for the repertoire for bagpipes led to a collection of more than two thousand melodies and a thorough knowledge of the development of folk, but also of courtly music from the twelfth century to the present.
