A local history museum for Fortuna (Humboldt County, in the far north of coastal California) and the Eel River Valley region, the Fortuna Depot Museum is part of the City of Fortuna's Parks and Recreation Department. The museum is located in the historic Eel River and Eureka Railroad/Northwestern Pacific Railroad Fortuna train depot, built in 1889. In 1974, when the building was threatened with demolition, a citizens' group lobbied to "save the Depot" and the City of Fortuna moved the building from its original location by the railroad tracks to the city's beautiful Rohner Park. The museum had its grand opening as part of the US bicentennial celebrations in July 1976.
