My approach when playing live is to blend improvisation with prepared loops/patterns, improvising can give unexpected results that I try to run with and take advantage of. Of course I only have two arms/hands like most people, so it makes good sense to do hybrid of prepared stuff and improv over the top. Reusing patterns and loops when blended together and manipulated can produce very different results each time. Doing it this way is much more fun, rewarding and enjoyable for me .... maybe you too.
