LULA B SHERMAN UMC was founded by Mrs. Lula B. Sherman, a beloved community leader and a truly undaunted social justice warrior, who changed individual lives and the Evanston, IL community. We welcome all compassionate and progressive people to join us in building on her legacy of commitment to God and community.
In 1922, Mrs. Lula B. Sherman, opened her home on Dodge Ave. in Evanston, IL for worship and fellowship, when Black residents were refused access to all-White Evanston churches. Posthumously named for Mrs. Sherman, the church continues to celebrate her devotion to unity through faith, social justice, community service and appreciation for the arts.
